Dr. Mylon J. Kirksy has over 22 years of professional experience in higher education working for several institutional types across the United States in student affairs, residence life, Greek life, and housing services. Mylon received his Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Public Relations from Illinois State University in Normal, IL. He received his Master of Communication and Information Studies in Organizational Communication from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. His Doctor of Education in Higher Education Leadership and Administration was received from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA.
In 2013, Dr. Kirksy established Sidebar Education Consulting Group, LLC with two colleagues. In 2016, he became the sole owner and serves as the founder and chief operations officer of the company. In addition to being an entrepreneur, Dr. Kirksy serves as the assistant vice president for Residence Life at the University of Texas at Austin and holds the rank of assistant professor of practice in the College of Education and in the College of Liberal Arts. He teaches the following courses: Higher Education Law, Campus Cultures, and Foundations of Intercultural Competency.
Dr. Kirksy’s areas of expertise are in organizational leadership, development and change management; student and staff learning and development; research, assessment, and evaluation; communications; and intercultural competency development. He is a certified behavioral-based interviewer and a graduate of the Institute for Facilities Management. His professional affiliations are with the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA); the Association of College and University Housing Officers – International (ACUHO-I); and the Association of Physical Plant Administrators (APPA).
Dr. Kirksy has been working with the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) since 2008. Since 2012. He has been using the IDI in developing and assessing co-curricular experiential learning programs through a pre-post assessment design. He has also created academic courses using the IDI in a pre-post assessment design. Through these experiences hundreds of students have significantly increased their intercultural competency in less than 15 weeks. Dr. Kirksy also consults with dozens of institutions and businesses and provides personalized coaching to leaders on how to improve organizational, team and individual outcomes related to intercultural competency and effectiveness.
